Downlights are a popular residential lighting option commonly seen in bathrooms and kitchens. Downlights provide direct lighting from can-like fixtures that are either recessed or surface-mounted from the ceiling. Downlights are installed in homes, often using old Halogen globes. We do recommend having halogen globes in for your downlights as they use 85% more power to run than LED globes.
Upgrading to LED downlights is energy and cost efficient – so you can expect your energy bill to be cheaper than normal. This is because LED globes are rated to last 30,000 to 50,000 hrs compared to halogen globes which only last 2000 hrs. They require less replacements and are easily maintainable after instalment. Not only are LED’s cheaper but they are also safer. As LEDs generate less heat and are a low risk fire hazard compared to halogen globes.
Lastly, LED downlights are more customisable to suit the aesthetic of your home. Halogen globes have a colour temperature of 3400K (a warm white) whereas LED globes can span anywhere from 4000K to 8000K (warm white, daylight and cool light). Often the temperature of a light can affect your mood, atmosphere and overall functionality of the room. For more information on light temperature read here.
These are one of the many reasons why we recommend upgrading your downlights to LED. It’s a quick and easy process and at QN Electrical, we provide our customers with a on-site review of your downlights for free, and we can upgrade them on the same day.
